I picked up the latest issue of R&R magazine with NJ Transit on the cover yesterday afternoon. Since I had recently ridden on NJ Transit, the story drew my attention. Once I started reading through it, I found another even more interesting story called "BNSF North Dakota Branch Lines". Now here's the deal, either a) I completely missed a discussion on it, b) someone is being very modest, or c) someone stole Hemi's name and invaded his territory. Whether it be a, b, c, or a combination of these, I recommend checking it out.
I got it too, having former relatives that were farmers in the upper and east corner of the state! I was back there in '92 when there was still some epic branchline stuff. ...and yeah, somewhere on here was adiscussion about it, that's why I picked it up.
I was recently looking at some of my GN train orders, from those old branch lines. Sad how so many once vital revenue producers are but a shell, if they still even exist.
Yeah, the big railroads don't want to be bothered by these little feeder lines anymore. Ex-wife had farming families in Langdon, ND always cool to visit them. Always catched a local there in town.
Aw, shucks... Probably a combination of all that, but glad to hear you enjoyed it! I will say it's interesting how the images you feel are your best didn’t make the article, and some you felt were a long shot went into print. I am still wondering what it takes to have a cover-worthy photo... I rarely shoot in portrait mode...
I don't remember ever seeing that mag. I'll see if it's at a local book/mag shop. Thanks to BNSF FAN for posting.
