Here is one from almost 25 years ago, the start of my steam fascination. December 1991, 3751's first outing after restoration. Photo taken in Barstow, CA before my wife and I boarded for a steam adventure over the Tehachapi Loop to Bakersfield, where we stayed overnight and returned to Barstow behind 3751 the following day, in rain and snow. Upon further review, this one was actually taken in Bakersfield.
I just love the massive presence of this machine. It looks big and powerful, just the perfect thing to get someone impressed by and hooked on trains. A beautiful, living, breathing beast of an engine. And look! It's giving a helping hand to that diesel behind it!
What locomotive are we seeing here, Chet? Where are we? It looks cold, which is great on a too warm for me summer's day.
I will hazard a WAG and propose it is this Or her sister 765. Coal burner for sure, looks like a Berk in profile
You may have it. The scene is certainly cold mid-west. The coal burner profile seems to be very close at least.
That's a gorgeous beast! Looks massive enough to have its own gravity. And there's a lot going on along the side - that must look awesome when slowly creeping along...
A couple of teasers, from the rail replacement stuff spotted working yesterday, June 30. And parked for long weekend today, when I shot 'em! And yes, even found another MILW car parked in town for a while! More here: http://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?media/albums/maintenance-equipment.3136/
Oiling Around, an engineer's task in steam days. Anyone who has frequented the Cowlitz, Chehalis and Cascade will recognize Harold
Big Boy in Omaha. With and without people. Jerry DeBene stole my camera and would not give it back until I posed for a photo. Here it is after I installed the "People Filter".
Had to make an emergency trip to Billings for a friend, again, and caught just a little bit of action. Saw MRL doing some switching and not much else. This GP is set up for tomorrow, idling away. And, no, these people aren't being dumb. The train is parked just shy of the crossing.
Also at the park on the bluff overlooking the river in Omaha. My people filter was working overtime to get all the tourist out of the shot.
