I upgraded from an older Dremel that would get so hot I could not hold on to it ( and no it wasent stolen..LOL). I enjoy the Dremel products being that parts, and bits are so easy to find in about any area. If you still have any of your old mandrels, stones, bits they will be an asset for a new one. John

There are several choiches you can make depending on what you want to do. Dremmel is like Mikey D's there everywhere, You can get one for 50 bucks. Seconed is Grizzly same tools or better at better price abit mail order. Third would be Fordom motor tools by far the best but expensive. There hanging shaft model is great for the shop there hand pieces are the best and come in many types. Grizzly makes a good one (I know I have one) although there hand piece is too big (Imo). A shaft tool and a vise is a great combination in the shop coupled with a portable unit in the tool box you are ready for almost anything you will come across.

Post Script: As far a interchanging different tools between different motor tools they will all work with each other as a rule, all you need is a set of collettes. They come in a pack of four for about 12 bucks.

If my Dremel ever quits, I'll certainly go for another of that brand. Mine has a switchable speed range. And I'd wish for an infinitely variable speed ability.

I have three different brands of rotary tools. The one I use most is my battery powered Dremel. I like it because it is cordless, easy to handle, quick battery change out, short, easy to get into those difficult spots, I can handle it much like I would a pen and the slow rpms's is perfect for my needs.

I use the others for drilling small holes, cutting balsa wood or thick plastic but when it comes to the intricate jobs out comes my Dremel. I didn't say intimate I said intricate! Grin!

Take what you want and leave the rest.

I use a Dremel that I purchased for my wife on her birthday several years ago, but that is an episode I would rather forget.

It runs fine, does what I want and seems to be the most popular. I would go with it. I do not know if the other brands have the same attachments (other than collette thingies) like the flexible shaft, etc. that the Dremel has.

Coincidence that the topic of Dremels comes up today...mine that had disappeared into the tool eating black hole that is our basement finally reappeared today...after I started to search for a replacement last night.

I have the model 770 cordless. Durability wise it is excellent (this one has been through about 7 years of hell), but I do have several issues with it. The most annoying is the tendency for the battery to come loose while using it. Also, it does tend to heat up to a worrisome degree when used for more than a minute or two. The battery discharges annoyingly fast to.

Having said all that, if I had the money, I would go for one of the newer Dremel cordlesses with the better Lithium battery

I bought a Dremel a while ago and it died. I bought another dremel last Christmas and it died yesterday. Am I just un-lucky with these Dremel's or is it a common problem that if you use this tool a lot, they will die. It usually gets very hot as someone said. My first dremel had varying speeds. The second one did not. I prefer to choose the speed.

Note of Caution guys...dont use any tool not rated at the drills rated RPM. Stones will explode if a lesser RPM rated stone is applied in a dremel. This is the main reason I use a Dremel as some of the lesser brands are not RPM rated.

I did this more decades ago then I care to count, Pushed the button, a 3/4 inch grey stone flew to pieces, stunned I just sat there a full second, with the power on, then realizing I wasent wearing saftey glasses and was lucky, but this isnt the end of my story

I grabbed my saftery glasses and quickley snached the other stone I found on that 2 for 1 sale, chucked it up, and yes I was not the brightest lad that ever fell off a turnup truck, I pressed the button....fziffft the stone went. I did not realizize for a year or so later during my Machinist Apprintiship why the stone blew up.
As I have said before...God, has been very nice to me over the years, still have all my fingers eyes and toes,.......o well to tell the truth I am loosing a few things...just cant remmmm.
    Be Safe....... John
