This has circulated around on the Railspot list in Yahoo! Groups. It sounds strange to even think of saving an F40, since they came out in the mid-1970s, but again I must be getting old The diesels of just my time (SD45, F45, even the GP38) are now either old or gone. Thanks for the heads-up, and I hope one stays in Amtrak paint. [ 01. December 2002, 19:06: Message edited by: friscobob ]
It would be nice to save an F40PH; after all, who hasn't seen or photographed an Amtrak train in the 70s/80s/90s without one. I also think it would be a great idea to preserve an SDP40F (or SDF40-2 to ATSF/BNSF). That was Amtrak's very first diesel, which, sadly, met an early end in Amtrak duty, through no fault of its own - a victim of bad press. They went on to spotless careers for Santa Fe and BNSF, but as it stands now, there are only one or two left, with the other units retired and scrapped earlier this year.
Hey, CSX has already "saved" a couple of them. I think they may be only leased, but still saved nonetheless. Here's a photo, with credit to the author as shown: Harold
