Latest progress on the current project. I kitbashed it out of an Kato SD40-2 using a rear panel from a Kato SD40 and a non-DB cover from an Atlas GP40-2. It is pretty much finished. I just need to use some Milliput to fill in some gaps, sand and paint.
Eh, I give it a "B." Seriously, looks great. Nothing like modeling the prototype's kitbash:tb-biggrin:
I used handrails stanctions from the Atlas GP40-2 hand rail set with some CA and .10 brass wire where needed. They are a little thinner than the Kato ones but I will thicken them up with extra coats of paint.
Very nice, very distinctive--one of three! One of one, if you count the relocated DB's... Based on your era of 1986, you won't be doing it in white pinstripe, but it sure looks great in that scheme as well.
Forgive me, but should you not have stripped the shell before doing all this great work? I wonder if the details will become lost with more paint over them if you do not strip it before painting, or if you do strip the paint, will that damage the glue or putty to make the conversion?
The existing paint is very thin. I will put a coat of primer, correct any flaws and then hit is with Polly Scale Paints. I usually do not completely strip shells.
Here she is in white-face goodness in Cali in 1998 ;-) http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=78135
Primered and ready for the paint shop. I will do the regular cascade green from the 86-88 time frame.
There's no easier paint scheme on the planet--Unless you model PRR or Mopac! Looking good, Tony--anxiously awaiting completion!
The SD40B you are working on is looking good. There are some photos at www.Trainpix.com under the BN archives. Each of the three of them are different. BN also had four GP9B that were homemade from wrecked Geeps.
BN was a heavy user of B units. They had a 120 purpose built B30-7A units and 12 other units. 5 x GP9Bs, 3 x SD40-2Bs and one each , GP38B, GP38-2B, SD40B and U30CB. All these were made from wrecked units except for a few of the GP9Bs that were purpose built for hump service.
I also finished all the work on this. I have been working both the SDP-40 and this unit together to save time photographing and painting. I just need to gloss coat it and then put on decals.
