I have just finished reading a book about the railways of Jamaica which prompted a little research on-line. Jamaica still intends to reopen its railways system. http://rogerfarnworth.com/2020/10/08/the-railways-of-jamaica
But there is indeed an operating railroad system in Jamaica ! Not public transportation of freight or passengers, but at least one industrial railroad that carries iron ore... Interrestingly enough it's US mainland style equipped, as one can see SD38-2s hauling iron ore gondolas.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9NNKKVF7zI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vOrCZz ... _rel_pause (indeed the locomotives look like former SD40-2s that lost central hood fan, probably with the loss of their turbochargers) Dom
Another visit to the railways of Jamaica, courtesy, this time, of H.G. Forsythe in the September 1963 edition of the Railway Magazine. ..... https://rogerfarnworth.com/2021/05/28/the-railways-of-jamaica-again Quote I have been reading historic copies of the Railway Magazine again. This time it was a bound copy of the magazines from 1963. ........ I came across an article about the Railways of Jamaica in the September 1963 edition which was written by H. G. Forsythe.
Roger, you have a knack for finding these obscure railways in obscure places. Your scholarship is engaging and the reading informative; I see and read things that have heretofore never crossed my mind, and thank you for that. I am rather impressed that a railway can take a company and increase every parameter from tonnage hauled to increasing wages in six years. So sad that it declined after this robust turn around. I imagine the lorry a forbidding competitor. Never knew Jamaica to be an exporter of aluminum and iron.
Thanks for posting this topic. I had never thought of exploring for information on such an operation. I hope they succeed in reactivating their railroad system.
