Here is another set.... http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/7-30-11/index.html All the rods off for the first time in many years. Regards, Kevin
Was there a small celebration, after all the bearing pulling struggles? Or perhaps just a sigh of relief?
Man, that locomotive is going to be brand new when you guys and gals get through with the fine job you are doing. :tb-biggrin:
I think the celebration was the sigh of relief. Grin All along the goal has been to do the job so that we will not have to worry about the future. There were things we could have put off, but we did them any way. Some things we never want to "deal" with again. Grin New photos, http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/8-6-11/index.html Regards, Kevin
I'd guess the "anchor" is a foundry identification marking. Would tell what foundry made it. Boxcab E50
Kevin, you are boxing up the bearings for shipment--back to Timken? Will they refurbish them if needed? Most of them look to be in great condition from earlier photos. :tb-biggrin:
As I understand it, They are doing an inspection and will refurbish as needed. The rods and bearings were an upgrade kit installed after WW II. This is a great opportunity for Timken to check their work on a product heavily used for years, then set off in "Storage" for a long time period. Regards, Kevin

I never knew those crossheads had so many notches. No wonder they stood up to all that cyclic motion. :tb-biggrin: Kevin, are those t-shirts available for purchase??
(Quietly) The cats are the real managment....... It started with a mother cat that showed up and had kittens. We took the family in and had them "customized" and put food out at every work session. The cats keep the rodent population away, and provide supervision... Grin, Kevin
We have an on line store, but the link is in flux. They are looking for a better way to work the sales end of it. The black and whit shirts are about five years out of print, the new ones are tan with color art on them. Also hats coffee cups and lots of other stuff. I can get an email if you want and hook you up to the source. Grin Regards, Kevin
Rodents can be horribly dirty and destructive to your project. Keeping them out of upholstery, wiring, you name it, is a huge chore. And what a nice source of free cat food....
Found a photo of the store, it looks like a few of the B&W shirts are still in stock, but in only a few sizes. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/6-11-11/slides/P5213303.html The new shirts are the tan ones, and there is a denim jacket with the patch on it. Regards, Kevin
Here you go the new set of photos. Some "purdy" welding there. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/8-20-11/index.html Regards, Kevin
Will those patches still allow full operating pressure of that boiler? Or will that number be reduced for enforced safety requirements?
Hi, The patch on the Fireman side is just tacked in right now, careful welding is required and we are going slow and doing it right. The repairs are going to allow full pressure, we are working to industry standard for pressure vessels. The low carbon steel (it came from war time demands, as the alloy steel was going to war production) is easy to weld, and the extra thickness (of the steel) contributes to the really good adhesion of this class of engine.
