The U-Plant is situated in steep Hidden Canyon, viewed here from an airplane. Steep valleys were chosen, in part, because the force of a disaster would be directed upward, protecting surrounding areas. The tall gray structure at center left is the elevator/stairway up to the Rim Station. Getting to the top—either by a cranky elevator or stairs—was the direct route back to Pittston. Otherwise, workers hitched the freight back through DeWitt. A switcher delivers cars to the loading docks. The freight line to the plant originates in Lower DeWitt, and exits just under the base to the stairway.
