ATSF 3009

2-10-10-2 built by Santa Fe in 1911 as a Mallet. Here on tour in Booth, Texas on November 11, 1911. Locomotive was cut up in 1917 to build locomotives #3015 with the high pressure truck and #3025 with the low pressure truck.

Was this experiment a predecessor to their famous jointed boiler design?

These monsters were designed and built simultaneously with the hinged boiler locomotives in the 3300 Class in 1911. Santa Fe decided that there were better ways to develop the power generated by these various weird Mallets and they were all cut up and scrapped, using the parts to build other smaller locomotives.

Too bad one of the hinged versions isn't in a museum. I still recall an RMC article. Mid- 1960's, where Bill Schopp(sp?), bashed a couple of brass engines to make one of these beasts.

I don't believe Santa Fe would have embraced preserving any such embarrassing rolling disaster and was quick to cover up all evidence by salvaging the useful parts and building smaller more productive locomotives.

      I suppose not.... Oh well.
