Helix Progress

The sub-roadbed assembly was designed so that it would be 1/4 inch thick with the roadbed installed.

Excellent idea to reduce the headroom between levels. I may try your technique when I get around to building my helix.

The headroom was a critical issue as I was limited to a 16 inch radius and wanted to limit the gradient to 2.5 per cent. This would leave a vertical separation of 2 1/2 inches from rail to rail, minus 1/4 inch for the thickness of the sub-roadbed. Lowering the roadbed by 1/8 inch gives me a clearance of 2 1/4 inches between levels, which is about the best I can do. This has been an exercise in compromise between sub-roadbed strength, radius and gradient, and clearance for trailer flats and hands! I will be posting a helix thread over on the www.scalerailsonline.com forum.
