Trying something a little different for this one. My customer and I have decided that any version of MILW would still be a thrifty RR and might look to simplify things and cut costs where it fit. That brings us to old engines still hanging around but rebuilt for new assignment. In this case we have a genuine MILW SD40-2 that clings to life some 30 years later but assigned for switching duty and perhaps the odd local job. In fact with the rebuild we gave this a new similar but less complex look to the other engines filling out the new roster. That would be a one color paint job. This may also wind up on all the rebuild power and the two color paint job will be for new engines only. Paint aside you have what is at it's heart an as delivered MILW SD40-2 with small fuel tank. Double plows. Bell behind the cab. And an all weather window. Owing to the rebuild for yard service the dynamic brake was removed and plated over. In addition this is a special unit equipped with one man operation radio control equipment. One little oddity is the double set of strobe beacons on the long hood. I have no clue if special lights are a common thing when an engine is in operation with no crew on board but it seemed like a good idea and a cool little detail in addition to the standard orange rotary beacon on the cab. While in the shop this had ditch lights added for any impromptu work not in the yard. My choice of the less than common pilot mounted lamps is simple. I know how to make working ditch lights with this style but have no clue how to do it with a deck mounted ditch light. This is N scale and there are not a lot of options to work with. I guess that is most of the explanation for this engine. It is what it is. Let us know what you all think.
