Once the glue has dried, a knife was used to form the foam into the hill. The other side of the shoulder will continue the incline, convincing the viewer that the railroad blasted through the side of the granite hill and later a road was cleared through. The small house represents the "Potter Inn" a restaurant that was open in this time period. The building is still there but is just a residence now.
