Funny to see coal motors in such hot freight service....

What was their gearing? Would that make any difference at all?

It would limit top speed, and acceleration would be different from the 4-axle hotrods...
The 'Grande SD50 in second position was geared 62:15, IIRC. Max speed is somewhere about 70 MPH. 57:20 gears, or the like, in GP60M's would max out above the century mark.

The photo above appears to be mid-1990's judging by the SP unit with the UDE light plated over. After the SD50's joined in 1984, that released some of the tunnel motors into general freight service so mid-1980's not unusual to see them pulling non-coal trains.
