Why cross now...

The engineer of this Amtrak lays on the horn as this fellow crosses the track in Ashland VA. This train was not stopping at the station so was doing the max track speed through town. The man got off the tracks with enough time though.

Why cross now...

I see this everyday! Whistle and pray is usually the only options you have as an engineer.

I've seen this quite a few times in Ashland myself. It was a favorite railfan spot when I lived in VA. The tracks run right through town as well as a college campus...Lots of foot traffic and as "Envirodude" indicated the trains may be going the speed limit when they enter town, but by the time they get half-way through, they are really moving!
