The loco is 2-2-4 Aerolite of the North Eastern Railway. It was rebuilt into it's current guise in the 1890s although the loco itself dates from the 1860s. It replaced an earlier 2-2-2 which was totalled in a wreck in 1859. The loco was used to haul the Mechanical Engineers coach. I haven't found out the reason behind the name yet, but it was associated with the Kitson family who built the original Leeds Northern loco in 1851 for the Great Exhibition.
Interesting. I've always been curious about the old time naming of locos. Was it done to promote something? Or? Boxcab E50
Sweet! I've gotta show this one to my son. He'll swear it came right off of Sir Topham Hatt's railway.
