This was a rhetorical question asked in another thread.

I have been at it for 11 months. I am still relaying trackwork. My layout is 4'x6'2"
I had four old locomotives from 25 years ago.
I had about 10 cars from 25 years ago.
    I just counted.

    I have 28 cars.
    I have 32 locomotives.
    18 are steam.

I am not playing with a full deck.

I know a guy with over 400 lcomotives and 2300 freight cars.

I've only got 6 powered diesels, 4 more dummies and maybe 30-35 freight cars.

~10 engines / 200 pieces of rolling stock myself...

[IMG] I wonder if I pulled everything out... if all my engines can pull all my cars...

that might just be interesting and certainly a pic for next weeks WNFF

Well I think the mininimum one needs is one, of course, to pull that one train . . .

But maybe we are all collectors somewhat? I think I'm up to about 13 locos and 50ish cars. (I don't remember off hand the exact # but it's written down somewhere.)

The collector mentality might get me if I forget the layout i'm supposed to be building when I'm surfing Ebay.

I am hovering around Colonel's fleet numbers, but mine is still growing for 2 reasons:
    2 railroads; BN & Rio Grande--and 3 eras: BN 1972-75, 1989, and DRGW 1987.
I am building quite a diverse fleet of equipment for my upcoming Rio Grande Secret Places Sub.

Well I have 15 locos and around 75 cars, but as of Nov.2, 2004 I took off ALL freight cars that have molded on details, that left me with a rolling stock fleet of 10!!! ZGotta get building!!

Well, actually, I don't know yet. I've got 30 with decoders, with probably 30 more targeted. Then there's the 20 LL GP20s, but only a dozen Bachmann F7 shells. Then there's the old stuff. It's going to take me a few years to sort it all out.

Same with cars. I've been on a buying spree lately. I have to sort through what I have for correct (or close to) era, running quality.

Just remember this mantra, taught to me by the Maharishi Athearn:

    "Too much is never enough"

As for me, I have 40-50 locomotives, all diesel, and about 150 freight cars. Toss in 10-12 cabooses (9 Frisco, 1 UP, 1 Santa Fe, the rest undec) and 6 passenger cars (gotta have something for my Frisco E8A and my Atlas/Roco FP7 to pull), and it's actually quite modest compared to some.

All kidding aside.........whatever you feel comfortable with is OK. You may want to figure out how many cars your layout can handle without gridlock settling in, and plan for, say, twice that many- that way, you can rotate cars and engines on & off the layout. Gives you some variety that way.

    Less than 2 months old:
    8 diesels

    25+ years old:
    3 diesels
2 ABBA sets with 1 powered A unit each
    2 Steam locos

    28 30 ton ore cars
20 or so mixed bag of freight
10 or so passenger in GN colors

Well to answer my own question:
I don’t really need any more. I expect eventually I’ll be getting a couple of undecorated “Macs”, DD40s, and anything I can afford with CP multi mark and GN Orange / maroon. I would love a fleet of SD45s in GGRR colors but I don’t know what those are yet. Currently I’m thinking of SP Grey Tops with Jenks blue bottoms and grey trucks and fuel tanks.

Alan, Where do _you_ get your freight cars? I'm just wondering who the best buys from. [IMG] You know, "where does the master cheif go to dine?"

I would really like to know the right answer to this question also.I have well over 250 loco's and still am finding engines i want to own.I model the BN,BNSF,and ATSF.But somewhere along the way I have gotten B&M,Amtrak,UP,N&W,SOO,Milwaukee Road,CEFX,And a few more roads. The bad thing about it is at one point and time the roads I model had the other roads engines on trains as lease power or just extra engines.I just can't find a way to explain that to my wife.

I have about 75 loco's and 400 freight cars. The loco's all have decoders.

I have about another 12 steamers that I have to install decoders.

All the loco's and cars are rotated through the layout. They all run on the JJJ&E.

Stay cool and run steam.... [IMG]
