Ken, I believe it was one day. As a kid I wondered what it would be like to ride the Western Pacific, California Zephyr. It never happened. As a matter of fact with a family of Santa Fe Rails, not once did I end up riding a Santa Fe Passenger Train. One school outing riding the SP mail train from Salinas to Gilroy, CA., and that's it. Well, enough tears and sobbing:crying:. I can't change the past. Upside this video comes close to a virtual ride from Portola to Davis, CA., on the Old Western Pacific. Thank God for Private Varnish enthusiast. Ride along and enjoy the video.
Ahh the ole Harlowton to Logan run and the beautiful Musselshell River valley! In another life I was a fly fishing guide for a gentleman in Three Forks. His 'lodge' was built by his mother (he's well into his 80s) back when as a railroad hotel with lodgings for rail employees. As much as I enjoyed riding the Northcoast Limited back when I really wish I could have ridden through Sixteen Mile Canyon or Homestake Pass (we always got off in Bozeman). An ole classmate of mine at MSU his grandfather was a conductor on the 'Road' as well.
Too brief. I wish there was more. Maybe I'll find another. The SIRR before it was "mustardized":
Ken, Liked the short video. Here's another train I didn't get to ride. Courtesy Dave Wilkie, Estate.
From the Dave Wilkie Estate. I believe the Feather River Railway Co., except for the connection to the old Feather River Route is now under water.
The lumber line had been working the area until it was almost stark (not a green minded statement). It was a perfect location for a dam and yes, you are correct. The Oro Dam, gosh I keep thinking the name should be different but yes. A dammed project went in and the ROW for the lumber company is now under water. This involved a project to relocate the W.P. Tracks. Pretty much all the logging railroads have played out and it's all handled by logging trucks.
There is still one. I had hoped to get out there this summer. Rats.
Oroville Dam, that be what I was thinking about. See the brain still works, how beit very slow these days. Ken, that's a cool video and thanks for sharing it. Looking forward to more of the same. Push pull or drift downhill & more Looks like a model railroader engineered and laid the track. Grin! Steam on the point? Ouch, now that's humiliating and no one corrected me. Let me try this again. You could put a piece of mail on the SP's, Westbound mail train, coming out of Los Angeles, Ca., at Atascadero, Ca., ............ and providing someone from the Hollister Post Offices was there to pick it up.... And I think you can put it together correctly based on the above information. I should be taken out to the wood shed. Of course it's full of trains so that wouldn't be a punishment. Grin. How about those dad-com-med steam excursion runs with those F-ing (that stands for flatulating, what you thought I was going to say something else, Ok I was...grin!) dratted DISEASELS! Can't they run any steam excursions with just steam on the point? I said, not LOL. How about that? Is there such a thing as wrong way running? See for yourself in this next video. Oh, before I forget. If John M. didn't like it I certainly did. Rare "Wrong Way" Running, Manned Helpers, and More!! trainsruleandroll Uploaded on May 28, 2011 On Friday, May 27, The Joint Line ATCS showed a train running south on a northbound track, which mind you is rare in these parts. I immediately headed to Palmer Lake to intercept the train, and it was quite action packed. Different railroads, interesting shots, wrong way running etc... has made this first catch of the day a good catch! Looks like Ken is doing a good job keeping the video's rolling. Some great captures and postings. I do have other things I need to attend to so...I will be away for awhile. Have fun and keep railfanning anywhere you can.
Metal fatigue or a casting flaw. Captioning says the train "pulled a knuckle". You pull a drawbar or break a knuckle. Soldier Summt country:
Skykomish is not the easiest place to get started up grade. Seems to me in earlier years they used to try to keep them rolling through here:
This next video is one my favorite short lines uhh...errr... tourist railroads. Nestled in what's left of the Redwoods of California, Santa Cruz, Ca. With the help of interviews with historians and railroad experts, legends and folklore are explored as well as the mechanics and maintenance of locomotives. As submitted by MantisDIY. To Ken, thanks for throwing in here and yes railroad terminology suffers in the hands and minds of railfans and model railroad enthusiasts.
So, I'm looking around and low and behold...did you know? You didn't? It ain't over until the bell tolls or the fat lady sings. I ain't heard neither so let's see what capture took place in this next video. Does it get anybetter then that?
