Hi, Recently I approached Andy Hart of Z-Panzer: http://www.z-panzer.com maker of the WWII BR57 armored locomotive and armored tanks about the possibility of him producing a North American shell for the Marklin 0-6-0 tank locomotive. Andy is currently busy producing the cars for his Panzerzug: http://www.ztrains.com/pages/closeup/panzer/panzer.html so it would be later this year before he could get any shells out, but he was interested in the possibilities of this project. I told Andy I'd pop this post up to get a feel for what model 0-6-0 locomotive shell would be popular. Any input would be welcome. You can contact Andy or myself with any suggestions. Thanks, John http://www.ztrains.com
John, This is great news! What style of North American 0-6-0 loco and what era? I would buy several IF it fit my era of 1890s even if each shell cost $200 each. John Bartolotto
I would really like an NP L-Class with slope back tender: but I would be happy with the USRA 0-6-0: -Robert
Robert that NP with the slopeback tender looks like it would be a great match for the marklin 0-6-0 mech. Now someone would need to make slopeback kits! edit...the tender part that is.... [ February 10, 2006, 08:28 AM: Message edited by: JoeS ]
Actually Graham Jones in Europe makes them. I bought 3 from him already. The frame is a white metal casting, and the slope back shell is a resin casting. -Robert
Sounds good. Thanks for the info. So if we get a shell like that, we can all convert the little 0-6-0's to slopeback switchers. That would be very cool. By the way, how much were the tenders from Graham Jones and is there a web site?
Robert, Would you please send me the info on how to contact Graham Jones about the slope back tenders? Last time I talked with him he told me they were not ready, but that was a few months ago. John jsbart@pjsnet1.de
Actually John, I bought those slopeback tenders along with the shells for the 0-8-0 conversion from Graham about 2 years ago, when he was contemplating making them a retrofit kit. Remember the trade of the NYC cabooses for the 0-8-0 locomotive when you just transfered to Germany, that conversion is what I needed the mechanism for. I'm one of those guys who is quick to be the first in line to order anything that another Z Scaler offers, as it has been my experience that within the first week of such offers, they change their minds because of the labor involved, so only the first people to jump on an offer are the ones to get the prize. I have lost Graham's email address from a computer crash last summer, so I don't know how to contact him other than from a Yahoo Group lookup. I have seen some recent posts from Graham on the list though. Yes, like I say, I am early adopter, so I have collected all kinds of neat things. I also have a bunch of your Nansen Street stuff too, and I have secretly been collecting 8899's in anticipation of your 4-4-0 shell's arrival. I want in on that one, as I have late 1800's cars and cabooses too! There are some of us who like turn of the century railroading, and between your work, Reynard Wellman, Kim Vellore, Graham Jones, myself and a few others, we can come up with some great steam era stuff! -Robert
I can't find Graham Jones contact info right now either, but I believe he can be contacted through the Z Club GB: http://www.ford.demon.co.uk/zclubgb.html The USRA 0-8-0 and the USRA slope back tender are not listed there as Z Club GB products, but I believe Graham did all thae other stuff they have as well. The tender he did could be used for the 0-6-0 as well. Perhaps we all need to send Graham an e-mail letting him know how much demand there is. I sent him an e-mail over 6 months ago and the reply I got back was that he had to do another run of the castings for the 0-8-0 and other pieces. He also posted a photo in his photo album on the Z_Scale yahoogroup photo section of an RDC! It pretty much went without comment. Randy
My first choice for shells for the 0-6-0's would be the USRA 0-6-0's since they were so widely used. My second choice would be more 0-6-0T's. The Aspen Model shell is too expensive to get more than one and the old ISM shell is no longer available. Alco, Porter, Vulcan and Baldwin tank locos would all fit my plans and could be used for logging railroads, industrial spurs and railmarine operations. I wouldn't mind seeing some plymouth or Whitcomb diesels or something like that either, even if I had to repower the 0-6-0. Have any of you looked at the chapter on Chassis Modification in the Nn3 Handbook? It covers remotoring the 0-6-0 chassis along with many other useful ideas. Randy
If anyone is still interested, this is the e-mail address I had for Graham Jones from 2004: graham@ford.demon.co.uk Dan S.
