Hello new to the board here. I Have a lionel/Marx 027 layout that I set up quite a few years ago & ran my childhood trains on it for a while. I recently got it up & running again & the set-up is working ok. I picked up a couple of K-line sets at the flea market Campbell's Soup & a 1991 Christmas set. I tried to run the engines on my layout but they are derailing right away when they come to a corner, box say's they are 027 sets am I missing something? I believe the engines to be an s-2 & a p-15 any help would be welcome thanks AL

I know the Campbell's Soup set is indeed supposed to be O-27. The other, I am not certain. The Soup set is an MP15 diesel? Is it derailing on all curves? Do you have the track which came with that set? Does the engine run OK on those sections?

I don't recall any problems ever with wheel gauge, however I do remember times when I found some (O-27) curved track sections which were somewhat narrowed.

Thank you for your response I set up a small oval on the floor & the campells did ok till i hooked a few cars to it & at higher speeds is still coming of track The smaller s-2 engine is still coming off track it appears to have a pre-set stop preventing wheels from pivoting all the way. My layout has a lot of hills even the older steam engines I have come off the track alot when pulling a few cars. can you suggest a better engine that might do well.

not familiar with those engines but if they have trucks that swivel they may need lubrication to move freely.
i have a dual motor Diesel that did derailed until I lubed the trucks so they swiveled easier. Once in a while they will start to derail and I know it is time for more lube. I used a silicone spray.

Not sure what "higher speeds" might be, but anything can and will derail when zipping around corners quickly.

Sure wish I could hold that engine and try swiveling the trucks while observing. This sounds like more than just being able to resolve it with some lubrication. They should have enough movement range for actually being able to go through a slightly small diameter circle.

I'd hesitate to make any suggestion, without seeing your track first. Lionel, whether the post-War, (1945-1969), or up to present day, can and does derail on occasion. But what you describe seems to be a much more consistent issue.

I was able to solve most of my issues. I bent out the metal steps a little wich allowed just enough extra swing to keep it on the track & I replaced a few of the old curve sections with some from the set. It still takes some carefull speed control to get them arround but that is part of the fun. The lube helped smooth them out as well. Phase 2 will have a few less hills & hopefully a lot less troubles. Thanks for the help will check in now & then....Al

Please do! Maybe a few layout pictures, one of these days?
