    Just curious

Has anybody ever resorted to using 1/72 scale items to create a scene in their HO layout out of necessity and hope it is set apart enough to not really be noticed or is that strictly taboo to you guys?

Strictly taboo. Except in necessity. Then you do as you like. Hell take those who quibble.

I very strictly use 1/87 exclusively.....unless something else works ;)
Thing is, you aren't sticking labels on all the parts of a scene that say "this is certified 1/87 HO scale", so it's strictly (in my view) subjective. Does the scene 'work'? Does it scream 'I'm out of scale', or do you buy into it? If it looks good and believable, I say do it.

When I modelled in HO, I would use 1/72 for some items and 1/96 for other items. You must decide how it looks, for example, a 1/72 U S Army jeep next to a 1/87 jeep is very noticeable in the size difference. 1/72 is a model airplane and armor scale while 1/96 is a ship modelling scale. Items from both will work, just look at the item and how it fits in. Figures from either scale do not work well in HO due to the size difference. 1/72 figures are giants while 1/96 figures are midgets. 1/96 figures will work in the back ground for a forced persecutive. Try what you find and see how it looks.
