Since the paper says "new motive power", I assume this is the announcement of the first J Class to be assembled...?
I have seen that same image somewhere recently. It is in book "The Steel Highway" by Cecil J. Allen published in 1928 in the UK.
Thanks for that nice builders photo, Roger. Looks like ALCO did some extra striping on 5249's tender. 5249 was the last of 50 J-1b class, so yes, Hank, the first batch of Hudsons. The way ALCO turned them out it was probably delivered just a few months after 5201.
I had not noticed this until you mentioned the stripes. Did this happen often, or were such accents a rarity? All that I can ever recall seeing in photos, is black with NYC lettering.
it was not too uncommon for them to gussy up a locomotive for the builders photos and then run it back through the paint shop before delivering it to the customer. Things like extra stripes on the running boards, tenders, drivers and all the wheels.
