May 1934 - East St. Louis NYC 6205, L-2d, Big Four version. Elesco heater, Baker gear. Harold K. Vollrath photo Fortunately, this picture is labeled on the back. It shows a Peoria & Eastern (New York Central System) train at Peoria, Illinois Union Station on December 2, 1934. CAPT Rex Settlemoir
More good stuff, Roger. Your Vollrath photo of 6205 is not in the collection I bought of his photos. It got culled pretty good before I got it. Love both the Mohawk and the heavyweight car.
6205 is interesting, this is the first time I remember seeing an Elesco tank embedded behind the smoke box face instead of above and forward of it. What was the function of the heavy-weight? IIRC, paired windows generally indicated a sleeper configuration, but the shorter window pairs near the far end are puzzling.
Those sub-class c and d Mohawks are my favorites. Without the feedwater heater extending over the front of the smokebox they can easily be mistaken for Hudsons. Yes - Love that NYC look with the low turret and cab. NYC locomotives always seemed to have a certain balance and grace. Form follows function.
I'm puzzled by that Pullman photo, too. There are so many varieties, and I can't make out which plan this might be. Roger, is it possible to make out the car name on that print? With some hints, I can go to the Pullman database and get some details.
I just had to go to the NYC bible and find out what numbers became different numbers in 1936. 6205 became 2905. Interesting that another CCC&StL L-2d, 6233, became 2933, the one preserved at the St. Louis museum, and Hank, it, too has the imbedded Elesco heater. I have a Vollrath photo of L-2d 2973, which once was 2473. Central's renumbering created a puzzle for us. Here is 2973. Also have 2980, same Elesco heater.
Lacking more information, I'm thinking this car may have been a private car or business car. It does look a little like a parlor car on the near end with the other half an unknown configuration. I even downloaded the photo and tried to enhance the image, but cannot make out any identifying markings.
