As I said in my other thread, I had to move and take down my HO model railroad.

The only space available to me is a ledge up above my head in a storage room at my mom's place.

In addition to wanting just a place to run my HO stuff, I'd also like a loop to run my American Flyer trains. These were at my parent's house until a few weeks ago when my mom moved out here.

Anyone have experience with this? I know plenty of people just put the tracks down unseniced, but I'd like to have something for them to roll through.

I also have a number of the AF accessories, but I don't think I'll make space for them.

I'm thinking S in front and HO elevated and behind.
Mountainous and rural scenery with few buildings that show the mismatched scale.

I also have a few pieces of Bachmann G Stuff that I'm going to put in a small garden railroad at my mom's place. (she's thrilled, let me tell you.)

Consider exagerating the perspective of distance by making the front-to-back distance of the scene appear to be much further than it actually is.

Create two ovals, HO oval inside the S oval. Erect a view blocking divider that allows the viewer to see only the near side of the ovals. If you have the visible track sections of the two scales far enough apart, you can gradually diminish tree and structure heights from the S tracks to HO tracks. This should give the illusion that the two tracks, though in the same scene, are much further apart. Also, elevating the HO tracks slightly, as you suggested, would further enhance this illusion.

This illusion probably would work best if the layout height were nearly at eye level, prohibiting the viewer from looking down and seeing the actual distance.

I think you have a neat challange, and look forward to seeing how you solve it....Good Luck

Well, I'm thinking it's going to be above eye level. Which may actually work in my favor.

Certainly it will be above eye level for everyone else in the family.

I agree with the perspective idea of S in front, HO elevated behind.

This situation sounds like an around-the-walls layout, meaning placing the S closer to the viewer is the same as placing it on the inside.

Oops, I had assumed it was more of a table, or mounted on one wall...my mistake. Though you and I make the same point, S next to viewer, HO at arms length or so....:tb-cool:
