Thanks for the compliments everyone! I had a blast taking all of the shots. I'll try to upload some more tonight if time permits. I meant to ask the crew who "Puddin Head" was but I got side tracked. Dang we were on the same bus and didn't even know it. You have some good looking shots. Do you have any more that you want to share? Ben
Day 2 Continued The following shots were taken from inside out tour bus and unfortunately some of them will have some reflections from the glass. Here we pass one of the yard towers. Then we pass by the East Hump Tower. Union Pacific Fruit Express Building UPFE 458266 Ben
Day 2 Continued Our tour guide referred to the piece of MOW equipment on the back of the truck as a "Spider". Looking closely at the truck reveals that the bed lifts the Spider up to the height of the hopper for easy loading. Ben
Day 2 Continued Union Pacific had several demonstrations where they showed us how they perform some of the rail car maintenance. Here we watched a crew demonstrating how they change out the cooling unit from a UP Fruit Express car. A crew showed us how they can re-rail a derailed car using a crane. Ben
Day 2 Continued The green lift on the left is used to remove and place the wheel sets under the car. We continued traveling through the yard where I snapped numerous pictures of items of interest. Ohio Crane MOW Equipment Ben
Day 2 Continued GTW Car #306561 This building is the rail car wheel defect detection building. One of the U.P. guys refers to it as "The Crack House" since it detects cracks in the wheels. Kershaw Crane Ben
Day 2 Continued A couple of shots of covered hoppers moving over the east hump. UP 4442 on the move through the yard. Additional MOW Equipment Ben
Day 2 Continued A pass through the ballast yard. A closer look reveals a surviving Grande car. Here we see a signal as we follow the pilot car over a bridge in the yard. Ben
Day 2 Continued I have no idea what this building is used for but Bailey Yard has it's own Area 51. UPP 400 was retrofitted from a caboose and now acts as the blizzard bus to move crews during winter storms when the streets are closed. Ben
Day 2 Continued More random shots from the bus. We conclude our yard tour with a picture of the diesel service area. The next group of photos will come from Cody Park. Ben
Ben,enjoying the photos, great stuff. When they are sorting cars on the hump yard,do they uncouple them manually?(something i have always wondered)Must have been agreat trip.Thanks,stu.:tb-cool::thumbs_up:
Yes they are uncoupled manually, there is a pin puller who walks alond and uncouples the cars as they roll by at a speed of 2-3 miles an hour. A shot of the engine maintenance facility from another angle. I stopped counting engines visiting the yard when I hit 200.
Hey Stu, I'm glad that you are enjoying the pictures. It looks like Karl beat me to answering your question. Thanks Karl! Ben
