I've started on this project a couple of years ago. I've had some setbacks and Honey do projects and recent remodeling 8weeks worth. Anyway I have shelves up and painted. My next step is either laying out the track roughly and putting the cork down I guess. What is my next step and how do you determine where the track goes? I am doing a simple loop around the room with a switch section side track so another train can set there until neded. If there is enough room. I need major help. Tips, websites etc anything to get this project going again. I am really frustrated by this. This is a hobby and supposed to be fun.
After you choose a trackplan, and draw it on your boards, you need to glue down the cork roadbed, then glue or spike the track to it. I like to glue it. This site has lots of trackplans, in lots of scales, including shelf layouts : http://www.thortrains.com/
Ahh, the layout planning is all part of the challenge...design it, plan it, lay it, build it, run it ... satisfaction plus. The hobby would be considerably less fun if we all ran Hornby ovals our of the box...which is exactly what you get if you remove the designing, planning and building stages :>) If you lack 'graphic representation' ability (looking at a picture and seeing it in real life), make yourself some track templates out of paper and go lay em on your board to see how much room you've got..... I like to know how much room I'm gonna need before I lay any basework, but thats just me :>)
Don't be discouraged. I drew a track plan for about two years before I had it like I wanted it to be. And, of that time, about 18 months was thinking about it. Once I had my givens and druthers set, it came fairly quickly. This was my third layout, so don't be surprised if what you finally settle on is not what you envisioned at the start. Just start over. This hobby is supposed to take time. Enjoy it with us and others.
Flash- Excellent advice! I'm still working on finishing the basement of my present home. Have found that while waiting, the planning has been more interesting than previously experienced. I'm really enjoying it. And what I'm coming up with, is beyond what was originally imagined. Boxcab E50
