OK Searails, you convinced my very leery soul to want your new Mikado shell because I'm hungry for a new steam loco, so much so that I sought out and bought a beautiful Mikado to go under it. And I'm looking forward to the conversion. I applaud your enthusiasm and push for this to become reality as I understand it is not a cheap undertaking. Then, I figured, I would get the heavyweights to go with them as I could afford to do so.

Then today you dropped the bomb (see below for the quote) of a $100 subscription fee??? Ouch! Are you really serious? The last time you ran a program under the same "subscription requirement" it was a dismal failure and those who paid out for the privilege to get your automobiles were left hanging. Luckily I was one of those who took the "wait and see" approach and thank goodness I didn't pay out and lose out. How are you going to pull the hundred bucks out of our very tight fisted hands for this part of the project? Especially in these economic times? I for one will forgo the subscription fee and live without your rolling stock, I have plenty for my Mikado to pull. Your good intentions are genuine I have no doubt but I think you should reevaluate your approach.

I never really understood the subscription thing either. But Locomotive shell for $50... I understand that : )

As for heavyweights, well I have a set that took a while to make up. Don't want to scrap them.

Ya, I'm with you guy's too. It'll be the wait and see game. That $50 steamer shell looks good though, and I wonder what the tender looks like. Besides, my wife say's my allowance is tapped out with my 12 car M-T GN "Empire Builder"!

I have 7 Mikes, and 7 Pacifics, and want to put shells on them all. I envision a shell with add on details, which will allow me to easily sand them if needed, then get bell, domes, air pump, stack, etc details properly placed on the model following NP prototypes. Also, I would need to extend the length of the smokebox to match my favorite prototype's look.

I have no problem laying down my hard earned jack in return, but I need to see large and examinable photos first, so I know what I am getting. Think along the lines of a GHQ N Scale shell kit, and you will succeed and sell many of these at the price you want to get. The economy is not so great now that sight unseen is still do-able for me.

I'm still not sold on the RP process for Z scale. Transitions are rough especially on smooth surfaces...on a steam boiler that could be impossible to fix. I think going the way of GHQ is the best solution...smoother finish and weight, something all steamers need. But, Jim seems focused on making this work, so I may eat my words...hope so!

The $100.00 fee is paid back by the 33% discount of the price of the first two cars.
And, of course, your purchase is fully refundable, no questions asked.

The way you have worded this passenger car offer is misleading to me. Is it 100.00 for the first two cars which is equivalent to purchasing them at one third off if the final price per car is 75.00. What are the first two cars going to be? This is important in decision making. In the end I am still not sure what you are saying as I read your offer RR-300:310 and I read the subsequent mail.

Originally the way I read your offer was, you were offering for purchase a subscription for 100.00 bucks which entitles one to purchase all eight cars at 33% off the MSRP. All cars less trucks and couplers. So if you sold all the cars for MSRP of 75.00 this person would get to purchase them for 50.00 each. So if you take the subscription price and divide that by 8 you are prepaying 12.50 per car so a final price per car would come to 50.00 less 12.50 or 37.50 each less trucks and couplers.

    confused for sure

    PULLMAN OFFER CLARIFICATION

Garth and other Z scale Modelers,

We regret there has been confusion regarding our offer. Your comment...

"Originally the way I read your offer was, you were offering for purchase a subscription for 100.00 bucks which entitles one to purchase all eight cars at 33% off the MSRP. All cars less trucks and couplers. So if you sold all the cars for MSRP of 75.00 this person would get to purchase them for 50.00 each. is almost exactly correct. Persons who subscribe before August 1, 2009, may purchase ANY amount of ALL cars, at ANY time, at an MSRP discount of 50%. And, the subscriber will continue to benefit from their fee by having a constant 50% discount regardless of MSRP, regardless of car, regardless of time. And, there are NO continuing fees, NO annual fee, this is simply an offer to benefit modelers who make an early commitment.

Finally, and to make it VERY clear, this offer includes a full return refund offer. If the subscriber decides to opt out of the subscription, then a full refund including the fee will be issued when all subscribed product purchased is returned without modification in its original condition when shipped. NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

We want to be very clear regarding this time-limited offer. Please ask more questions. After its August 1 expiration, the only discount offered will be to volume buying dealers, OEMs, and Clubs.

    The Pullman Standard Heavyweight cars will be developed and released in the following order;

    1. Railway Post Office & Storage Car
    2. Baggage-Express Car
    3. Combination Coach & Baggage
    4. Coach Car
    5. Lounge Car
    6. Dining Car & Kitchen/Galley
    7. Drawing Room Sleeping Car
    8. Observation Car

We do NOT believe these eight will be the ONLY cars manufactured.

"Heavyweight" subscribers may purchase, at 50% MSRP, SPECIAL ISSUED Road Name Specific Pullman passenger and business cars; and unique cars such as the American Red Cross Hospital car, Chapel cars, and any other car the subscription members suggest would be appropriate to manufacture.

    Cars for continuing production include (no decision has been made);
    Santa Fe’s Chief (1926), the Baltimore & Ohio’s Capitol Limited (1923), Great Northern’s Empire Builder (1929), Southern Pacific’s Daylights (1922), Southern’s Crescent Limited (1922), Pennsylvania’s Broadway Limited (1902), and New York Central’s 20th Century Limited (1902).

Thanks for asking Garth, project progress reports and photos will be sent to subscribers when available.

Since the subscription ends Aug 1st and you posted that first shots won't appear till min Aug. Could you post a 3D drawing or even the (I'm guessing) RP master used for the pewter. I'm mostly interested in the steam loco shell. With the Marklin chassis not being perfectly to scale I'm sure some fudging needed to be done to get the shell to fit it. It would be nice to see how this was handled.

Not trying to nit pick, but it is hard to buy something without seeing it. This is even true for the major MFG's out there as well. The refund offer is a great "just in case", but it'd be nice to see first.

    Thanks

    PULLMAN SUBSCRIPTION PHOTOS

    Chris, You are absolutely right!!!
We are convinced to extend the subscription offer until we have "something to show".
We will show RP CAD images only as progress reports, we WILL show photographs of the RP first articles.
Then, after the photos are posted, we will wait a full week, and close the subscription.
Regret this attempt at providing an early purchase benefit wasn't thought through thoroughly.
    Jim
PS - we're on copper, so please be patient for the website to change.

OK I did some investigating. At first I was worried about the 2-8-2 because I remember all the steamers I wanted to make and making a 2-8-2 out of the Marklin 2-8-2 seemed the most impossible due to the driver spacing and the motor sticking out the back (I was trying for a USRA heavy 2-8-2)

So I saved the J-class drawing from Searails site, cropped the locomotive to the 49'-3-1/8" measurement and resized it to Z scale (2.69") and printed it out. Then I placed a Marklin 2-8-2 body next to it with the stack and cylinders lined up.
It is hard to photograph, but the cylinders are lined up in the photo. The Marklin cab is just barely longer than the plans cab.

Also the steam domes lines up pretty close, this is where the screw is to fasten the body to the chassis.

I would suggest to Searails to lengthen the boiler .100" over the plans (you can split this up over several different areas) This would help hide the over spacing of the Marklin drivers and also help hide the motor. BTW the cab is longer in the plans so that gives plenty of room for the motor.

I do plan to re-power mine with a 0816 Faulhaber or Maxxon and I'm determined to get it in the tender after seeing Lajos use universals on his 4-6-6-4 chassis.

After all this I will go order a loco body and cross my fingers.
