I had this hand-me-down 30 degree module from an N scaler. Sorta overkill weight wise with 1x6 pine siding and 5/8 ply on the top. But, track work was started for Z so I decided I'd use it for "filler" at NTS. Then I got the idea that I would use it to show how scenery is done, exposing section-by-section down to the pink. Eh hem. But alas, it got my "scenery in an hour" with baste and sprinkle while everything is wet technique. (excluding ballast which takes HOURS). It had some sidings (spurs, whatever) that were originally going to be used for some detailed structures but hey, I had no time before NTS so they are greenery right now. I've always had the desire to make a desolate siding, a great example I found in last years Railroad Model Craftsman, with WELL weathered cars. So I finally got busy. Everyone complains I never get anything done. Well I do, when I get to it. Before: Now let me show you a bit closer: The next post I'll show a few more views and a link to my gallery .
So here are a few more pix. I added Silfor Buffalo and Prairie Tufts (4 and 2mm), both a bit too tall for Z, then some Static grass (mostly Autum with what I tought was a reasonable amount of green). It's all a scale too large but it looks better than nothing. The mainline rails are painted Roof Brown (and definitely look brown with the real naked eye). I painted the mainline passing track with diluted Rust (wiping the rail with my finger to leave a schmear of coloring on top). The rear rails got full strength Floquil Rust and DO NOT look that rusty to the eye at all. The camera must be boosting the reds. Jeff I was wondering when I was going to see this module done. Nice to see you kept MY original track plan. Looks great and a whole lot different when we were talking about the scenery. Glad to see it almost finished. Best Regards,
Why don't you come to the Pleasanton show and run some Z Scale on you old module Nick? Don't you still have your BN logging train?
Nick ! It was too heavy for regular use but I got desperate for NTS and abandoned the major scenery idea since this would be painless to rip up if needed. After the 2 shows, it seemed to be begging for some thing else, detail wise, when I parked a couple of ballast hoppers and some MOW type flats. Can't put anything tall on this module due to transport issues. Still, think this module will get set aside in favor for a new lighter one. .
Looks great Jeff! I like the abandoned siding as well. I covered the Marklin switch boxes with a thin layer of ballast. It the best way to sort of hide them. I carefully "masked off" the "hole" and then spread a thin layer of white glue - full strength. Laid the ballast down. Vacumed up the excess. When that first layer dried, I touched up the ballast and 50/50 glued the whole thing down. Careful not to over-glue, so as not to gum up the electrical workings. I had to sand things up a little bit to give the proper wheel/truck clearance at the rails, but other than that, it worked great. Keep up the good work! Bill Mock
Have to dig it out but I should have some stuff. And I need to stop by one day for a visit. Have some ideas......:tb-biggrin: And Jeff as for weight This is what you had me get. LOL Module looks great would like to see it in person some day..(2 jobs kinda had to play with trains)
Nice work, I really like the hay growing in the rails, nice effect. must be a monster to lift with those 1x6. Ben
When I had The module with no scenery it wasn't that bad and the 1x6s where there since I was going to do a nice bridge. But now I dont know.
Jeff dug out the old Z and I might make it out to P-town to run with you guys...:tb-biggrin: Just have to go by Rob's place now and talk to him about some ideas.....
