    some short lines with mostly left hand curves used 33" on the inside and 36" on the outside rail... this helped reducing wheel wear ....

    What were wheel sizes back in the 1950-1960s time period? Were they all the same size back then?

    Flash, 33" wheels were the norm in the 1950's and 1960's. Roller bearing trucks with 36" wheels were being delivered on the new cars arriving on the railroad scene in the 1960's and I'm sure there were probably smaller wheels rolling around in that time period, but neither were nearly as common as 33" wheels and friction bearing trucks.
