Hello Everybody,

This is my first message in The TRAINBOARD Z COMMUNITY, i used to read everybody but i don't write because my english is not so good:tb-embarrassed:.I'm French.
So first of all i do apologize for my bad english , i hope you will understand me.
I'm writing today because i would like to know if somebody knows if AZL,MTL... are going to made ARR locomotives.I have read ,time ago, something about E8 from MTL, and AZL are going to made GP30 ( ARR lines??).
So if someone have an information , i will be happy to know it.
Thank's for your answers.

I believe Marklin made an Alaska F7 unit with a B unit as well. They go for a high number though due to the rarity of that line.

Theirs a member on here who has an Alaska caboose kit that is amazing. I would recommend it if your into building rolling stock.

Hi eltiti1,

I have an extensive collection of ARR in Z both custom painted and what was available commercially and would be happy to share with you about it via personal emails. I lived there for over 30 years and have dreams of modeling the many scenes we saw nearly every day. It is nice to hear of someone in France also interested in ARR!!! I have 2 friends who speak French if I were to need help :) I get teased for loving ARR so much!
My email address is stonebridgedesigns@charter.net

Here are some links to my Picasa web albums containing just some of my handiwork in Z scale. I've been so busy designing Z scale kits for our company that I have not made a layout for all of my Alaska collection but I will eventually!

Oh, by the way, I am a woman :p and my husband and I are quite a Z scale team!!!

Looking forward to seeing photos of your Alaska layout!

As you will see, even if you can count on one hand the amount of members who can speak french in here, You willl always find all the help you need from any members.

To answer your question, so far, you will only find commission ARR locomotive that are basically kitbashed or modified existing loco's, and sometimes are sold on Ebay. Nothing in ARR so far, beside the F7's units.

Be sure to visit the french forum in zscale here http://us.leforum.eu/f8-Z.htm there are members that are regular on both forums.

Lol, that was one of the first things I was going to show him Robert :)
I also have the complete collection of FR Alaska Railroad items (I think all of them anyway) besides 4 or 5 custom painted locos by Joe D'Amato and David Freehling and also MTL's Alaska smoothside passenger car set, and everything ARR by Marklin. All in all I have a nice collection. I do believe that you will need to have most items custom painted but we have so many talented guys on this forum who can do the job perfectly!
What got you started modeling in Alaska in Z?

Nice looking loco.
Can you tell me the visual difference between the SD70 and the 70MAC? Just wondering how much alterations one needs to do to turn a AZL SD70 into a 70MAC?

Loren, it looks similar, but there are significant differences. First, the step just behind the engineer side has be remove, and a laundry chute has to be added. Then theres a 3 foot extension to the chassis. This is noticeable if you look at the end of the radiator. There also altanator grilles below the dynamic brakes and the radiator. It one of my projects I want to do, but maybe its too challenging.

Loren, the SD70MAC is slightly longer than the SD70M (74' vs 73'2in., according to Gerald Foster's "Field guide to trains"). But the most visible feature is the long hood protruding a little bit beyond the 3 aft upper fans, that makes the difference clearly visible (picture of the BN unit below, look at the arrow).

Otherwise, in order to give my fellow countryman eltiti1:tb-wink: a reply, one has to know that ARR mostly used 4-axle locos until the advent of SD70MACS and their radiant axles, due to the line's tight curves. Only a few E-Units were used for a while, as well as a handle of very rare EMD (or ALCO samples) MRS1. Some tests were also undergone with a pair of CN SD40s but soon the units returned to their mother network.

So if you want to use any other unit than Marklin's F7s, your only choice is (for the moment) repainting a MTL 4-axle loco (F7, GP35), or repainting and kitbashing a MTL GP9 or an AZL GP7 (in order to change its high short hood into a low short hood, as I'm not sure that high short hood samples ran on that line).

But stay tuned: indeed MTL released ARR passenger cars a while ago, that could mean ARR Geeps following quickly. And the forecoming AZL GP38-2 will be a good basis for an ARR repainting.

Hey Dom,
Thanks for the quick update on the MACs. Looks like a bit of bashing would be in order to make the AZL locos look correct in ARR colors.

Dom, to me the hardest part is removing the step up and doing the railings around the laundry chute. I dont think theres enough railing on the SD70M to do cut and glue it to shape. On my GP40 FEC434, I had extra parts to build the railings, courtesy of Joe D.

Mmhh... Indeed I guess converting a "M" into a "MAC" would not be that easy, even if these have many common features....

Salut mon ami!

No, I'm not in the french carribean. Leaving tomorrow bound for Mauritius (no railroads there....:parghh:). In 2 weeks I'm scheduled again to Dominican Republic. I'll rent a car in order to watch sugar cane trains like last year, and I'll go on repainting my ex-UP GP35 into a Ferrocarril Chiapas Mayab (G&W) unit. But until now I'm not pleased with the repainting work, that's why I'll wash my unit' shell again with 90° alcohol on these next days....
