    Pend D'Oreille Review
    WOULD BUILD TOURIST HOTEL
" That Lake Pend 'Oreille would be the mecca for thousands of pleasure seekers, if the great railroad companies operating near the shores of the lake would only spend the money in advertising its beauties and in building a large hotel at some point near the lake, is the belief of several Spokane business men present at a meeting of the Spokane County Good Roads association last week in the Spokane, at which meeting President Howard Elliot of the Northern Pacific was present.Pend d'Oreille Lake was the main beauty point brought out by several speakers as a reason why the railroad should build a chain of tourist hotels inthe west to attract the easterner.
With a large tourist hotel on its shores and smaller inns at points of intrest around the lake , tourists could pass weeks of pleasant relaxation and have a differnet outing for every day of their extended stay. The lake is already equipped with a fleet of steamboats and gasoline launches and it would take weeks in a launch to explore its long shore line and search out the innumerable beauty spots. "

I do believe this area of the Cabinet mountains , Selkirk mountains, the huge uplift of the Monarch mountains and the richness of the lake is only surpased by Yellowstone, and I get to live here....

Sounds like foresight to me. I have only stayed in the vicinity once, and it certainly is beautiful. Right on the shore of the lake, as I recall. The wife and I were in the process of chasing 4449 on her trip into Montana a few years ago.

    NP WANTS LARGE POTATOES

" Eaton Edgerton, secretary of the Commercial Club is in receipt of a letter from Prof. Olin of the U of Idaho. In the letter is an extract of a letter Mr. Olin received from the Northern Pacific , which reads as follows: " I will be only too glad to handle all the potatoes that might be grown in northern Idaho, providing of course, the parties you have in mind will be able to porduce a potaato that will average two pounds in weight and from that on up as large as they grow." H. J. Tutus , superintendent dining car service, Northern Pacific raliway, St. Paul , Minnesota." - from the Daily Bee Archive -

Seems he ( H.J. Tutus ) was riding on the NCL and heard two farmers complaining about selling their IDAHO spuds for hog food.... and the rest was history, for 50 years the NP featured Idaho spuds and built an advertising campaing around the spud and made it " Famous Potatos" . yep, I have ate my share indeed .. BKing uses them for their french fries !!!

A lot of potatos in the Pacific NW. In eastern Washington the vicinity of Othello (MILW), and Warden (NP, MILW), were huge spud processing centers. There is still a fair amount of that activity today. In the mid-1950's, the MILW built a separate yard in Othello just to handle all the frozen food shipments, majority being potato items.

Yea, eastern and southern Idaho, big potatoe growing region. Home of the IQF Simplot potatoe , Birds Eye , Green Giant and a couple others . I have planted a few thousand acres as a high school student during summers. Idaho seems to have the best spuds ( russet type ) . Pocatello was the perfect place for UP, spud dumps and beet dumps and other services thru out the southern route , but it was the nothern spud that was picked due to the size they were able to get . Still, Washington potatoes are pretty ok as well !!! though a bit puny ... LOL
