I want to model CB&Q SD45 #530/BN #6462 in the Q's pre merger green and white. Would it be a good bet that the color is BN Cascade Green or is it some other shade and where would I get decals?? I guess this question would also apply to Burlington's green freight equipment as well. #6462 showed up on the WP several times according to several books I have, and I think it would make a great unit to have on my WP layout. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! [ April 08, 2005, 06:00 PM: Message edited by: WPZephyrFan ]
For what I know, it looks like BN green. http://www.jerryapp.com/pix3/ja-r607.jpg shows it to be very close. The image of 530 on fallen flags is too dark to be of any help whatsoever, except for decal placement. HTH! Maybe someone with a book of CB&Q stuff will be able to better help you...
Also, http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD45/INDEX.HTM shows #516-530's postmerger numbers, so looking up those numbers could also score you more images.
John, Use cascade green as from the photos I have seen the C,B&Q experimental scheme is the same shade. Decal set Microscale set 60-190 has the nose stripes and lettering You will have to mask the shell and paint the hockey stick stripe
Thanks, guys! I was under the assumtion that only one SD45 and a U23C were painted in the green scheme. I guess more research is in order! It's interesting to me that in my WP Color Pictorial, there two photos of 6462, five years apart...and the older photo (Oct, 1970) shows a dirty paint job, while the newer one (July, 1974) shows a clean unit. A wash job? I know how hard white is to keep and get clean! Again, thanks!
John, The CB&Q purchased 15 SD45's and they were all Cascade Green, black and white. There were 9 of the U23C's in the same scheme. Al Holck's book (Four Ways West vol II) has three pages of good photos including a photo of 527 - 530 (Burlington #'s) brand new at LaGrange. Don't forget to share photos with us as you progress! Jack
Now, I just need to find a good SD45... Did Kato make one? Or, what about Bachmann? Weren't they supposed to make an SD45?
Get a Kato one. You can find them on ebay quite often. IMO the Bachman one isn't very good. If your luck you can find a BN one on ebay and just strip off the numbers, logo and nose strip and may not even need to paint the whole thing.
I think Kato is about due for a re-release of the SD45's. They have the new DCC ready chassis from the most recent SD40 releases, so maybe it's just a matter of time. I used to have two of the Kato BN SD45's but sold them when I narrowed my modeling to the CB&Q era. IIRC, they were going for around $100, so they might not come cheap. Good luck!
If you use one of the Kato BN shells, you will have to extend the black down to approximately the center of the cab along the long hood. The black came down to the center of the top latches on the short hood doors under the radiator. It stopped at the bottem of the radiator on the BN scheme.
