It is May of 1982, near Oban (Lancaster, CA). Another gloomy day (our famous "June Gloom" weather) SSW 9393, SD45T-2 on the point of this manifest. [ 14. June 2004, 23:25: Message edited by: NSCALEMIKE ]
My very favorite of all engines and my very favorite logo, too. Doesn't get any better. Thanks for the post.
I need to be bored a little more!!!! The 45 is my favorite Tunnel Motor too, although I'm more partial to the speed lettering ones (pending order to prove it! ) Your pictures always make me stop for a while and take a deep breath during a hectic day. Just so you know from boring
Ok William...I have a few more for you and Flash...although not a tunnel motor...the first one is at the old SP Taylor yard signal tower, called Dayton Ave Tower...the second one, a SD45T-2 on the point of a train taken at Woodford (Tehachapi) both circa 1982
Mike, As always, great shots. Please please please bore us some more!!!!!! Those elephant ears are neat on the 7780. I have never seen that before.
Mike, Don't even think that for a second, we rely on guys like you to get the prototype forums active, feel free to post as much as you wish, I know I enjoy looking at all your pics.
You always gotta love vintage SP/SSW shots!!!! Heres another SSW B30-7 with "elephant ears". Image by John Rosser, Watsonville Jct,CA 1984: I believe these are actually an experiment with baffling the sound. The real elephant ears for the intake of cooler air was originally done on the GP40Xs and SD45s. GP40X #7200 (Ron Lehmer):
These elephant ear experiments were precursors to the tunnel motor series, SD40T-2 and SD45T-2. Or did tunnel motors already exist when these experiments were being done?
Yes, the elephant ears were experiments that eventually led to the development of the tunnel motor style body.
