Due to work on the east coast main line, some freight trains and a Deltic-hauled special train were diverted via the line through Spalding.

Here is the return run entering the station from the Peterborough direction. I believe the tran ran Newcastle-King's Cross and return. It was 8 pm as it passed us, so was getting a bit dark, but the pic turned out reasonable well.

    Not bad at all Alan.

The coaches made me think of "what-if" the Deltic's had lasted in service a bit later, would we have seen an Intercity painted Deltic?

This is the first time I've managed to see the Deltic. The view from the footbridge at Spalding was great. I'm sure the pics that Matthew took will come out well.
If he'd of come up the main line 2 hours earlier, could of been my ride home!! :D

Lovely, Alan - 2 or 3 years ago a Deltic was used for a few weeks during the summer on a regular service train (yes, not a special!) between, I believe, Birmingham and Ramsgate and I managed to see it a couple of times at Kenton on the WCML; took a not very good picture but don't know where it is now; can't remember whether it was digital or film - the sound of that engine does something the same to my insides as hearing Merlins when a preserved Spitfire or Lancaster flies overhead (something we are lucky enough to see reasonably frequently as we live about a mile from the RAF museum).

Am off to Spain in August (as mentioned in the thread I started the other day) so will try to capture some interesting Spanish trains and put the pictures up on Trainboard.
