Due to the fact that my layout is the attic with all the timber in there taking photographs is not easy so I am contemplating making a diorama just for photographic purposes. Size would be the top of a paste table about 6 x 2. Anyone have any suggestions for a location? I'd like to model an actual location. As I have a model of the East Portal I thought about doing a more accurate scenic area areound the tunnel than I have on the layout. I also though about the Mitchell curves on the TP but as I have some passengers trains they would be out of place. Any suggestions welcome PS had a thought what about putting the East Portal one side of the hinge line and the TP tunnel portal on the otherside.
Just a thought- It's not a location. But, if you'd have two possible scenes, how about one with summertime foliage, and the other done in fall colors, or winter? Boxcab E50
D&RGW scene I once thought(scary) of the area between tunnels 2 and 3 on the Front Range, but for all the trees I reconsidered thinking.
If you want someting fantastically beautiful, do Tunnel 27! Nearly all east slope varnish is correct for this area ( CZ, Prospector, Exposition Flyer, Yampa Valley Mail, RGZ, Ski Train): You should have plenty of space to do that scene!
Great suggestions, it's got to be photographable ( is that a word!!!) so having the track on the side of the gorge is a good move, need to have the front clear for the camera. Gore canyon could be a starter using the tunnel as the break at the end of the board and saves on trees.....not my best thing at modelling. Mmmmmm things to ponder.
Another GREAT shot by our own Frontrange, Kevin Morgan, at Rock Creek Canyon: http://www.coloradorailfan.com/skitrain/photos/101340.jpg
Living in an area where the highest hill is at 900ft and its all rolling countryside flat desert doesn't do it for. Rio Grande will always equal mountains and I know there are some fantastic desert locations. Actually there is some great canyon shots in Never on Wednesday and other books I've got......bang goes using the WS snow!
diorama Actually, I might do a scene between T-3 and T-4 as there are less trees and it curves to the outside. Maybe.........
Andy, if you are still opposed to making trees, you could always build the showshed at Corona, 11,660' Rollins Pass! Treeline ends just about 11,000 feet elevation... Heck, for that matter, you could build Rifle Sight Notch Loop and Trestle.... Needle's Eye Tunnel.... Devil's Slide twin trestles--all are above treeline... The only issue is you could only photograph DNW&P or D&SL steam, and not that it's a bad thing!
Tunnel 3 is the gash in the slab: There's a few trees in this area, but a snow scene will cover them well: http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/629/snow_T4_EP_empties.jpg In summer:
That looks good T3 to T4... I can slope the scenery away from the track towards the front of boards and the tunnles make an instant scenic break. Don't even need to make any tunnel portals.
At least not cast concrete ones... I look forward to this project, as I am building the same area as well. Your's will likely be better!
Many thanks but I doubt it. Haven't got this past the management yet but I doubt if she will complain! She's very understanding of me and trains, luckily she comes from a railway family and works in the industry herself. Glad to see your tunnel district is progressing, I keep reading your blog.....excellent stuff. I wish I had the room but our garage is only 19ft x 8ft and mainly full of junk....the only time the car goes in there is when we area away on holiday and then I have to empty it, get the car in an repack around it. Thank god for compact 4 x 4's. (Thats compact European (well Japenese ) rather than compact US).
Are you planning on a snowy scene? It was most striking morning, when I captured the snow shots. I think it would be a spectacular diorama in snow.
