Taken at Kingman AZ depot. The depot is currently closed for "renovations", it is unknown when this will happen...but I am sharing a few pics I took the other night.
It is interesting. I was in Kingman in the late 90's. Took the train from Kansas City over and back. Seems that the station was closed then too? This may be like the St. Louis rehab which tranlated to a dump of a portable building for years. May still be there for all I know? By the way. On the trip back we were caught in the monster snow storm that covered everything from Denver south and grounded flights, stopped busses and trains and made us fourteen hours late getting to KC. Doc
I use a Canon 20D (digital)...the exposures varied (25-40 seconds)...along with different aperatures I was playing around with. Most of the processing I did after the fact was to correct all that harsh lighting from the station.
It's close to the Calif boarder, easy access to Las Vegas. It's one of the places where you can " get your kicks on Route 66". Night time is the best time to be in Kingman, it tends to be one of the hottest spots in Arizona. I love first and last shots with the lights (looks like a vehicle drove thru the first pic). Night allows for some great effects with lights.
According to an online source I know of, it has been shuttered since at least 1999 due to problems with asbestos. There is a sign indicating restoration...but the sign is in really bad shape...who knows what the status is or could be. The "waiting room" for Amtrak passengers is just a block up the street in a converted tattoo parlor (or so I was told)
I live in NV, its about 1 1/2hrs from my house...It is closer to CA, right off of I-40...in the NW part of AZ, part of the BNSF "Transcon" on the Seligman sub (I believe)
I will be there in September for my granddaughter's wedding, and have been there many times since my daughter and her family have lived there. Those are great shots. I never thought that depot was photogenic, but you have proved me wrong. You guys know I'm an old steam curmudgeon, but the last time I was there to visit, I got a tour of Kingman Canyon, and if time permits, I will fan it with the diseasels. Lots of traffic and great scenery there. :teeth:
It's west of Flagstaff, per the song: Now you go through Saint Louis Joplin, Missouri, and Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty. You see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona. Don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino.
Great shots. I was through there not too long ago...they had the entire highway torn up but it looked like they were actually doing some work on the station (???). John
Kingman, AZ is the county seat for Mohave County; about 1 hour from Laughlin, NV. Trains rumble through the town about every 17 minutes or so. Good place to shoot px is west of depot. Walk toward bridge along tracks: lots of curves, slight incline. Also check out hotel; rennovate a few years back. Great for night shot. For what it's worth, if you continue on the Interstate to Needles, stop by the old freight yard there. Lots of great shots. Excellent shots. Local chamber of commerce is also quite helpful for Kingman or route 66 information.
I couldn't see any evidence of work being done there...at least not on the exterior...normally one would see large containers etc for the work crews / gang boxes or other related equipment...nothing was there except a few transients relieving themselves!
I was through there probably in April (?) and it l.ooked like someone was on the roof working (hard hat and all) and there was a resoration sign actually posted near the highway...maybe they are working on it a little at a time??? John
