One day in the very early days of CSX when I was out railfaning I caught this train. It had a 8 locomotives on it representing many of the roads that made up CSX.

    Location: Ashland Avenue, Glenolden, PA
    Line: Philadelphia Subdivision
    Train: Eastbound frieght
    Date: c1989

Unfortunately I never saw the Chessie Steam Special run. I can only remember seeing two steam locomotives on the Philly Sub. The Freedom Train but I don’t remember the locomotive. And then there was another steamer but I heard it go by and by the time I could see the tracks it was gone.

    Tom,
Alot of people missed the CSS too. I only ever got to see one steam loco my whole life, rode behind it too.. The Western Maryland Scenic R.R. in Cumberland, MD and it runs up to Frostburgh, MD... A nice little trip for a 2-8-0! The loco is painted up as a Western Maryland H-7b, with the number "734"...

A few members of Trainboard here met last year on the weekend of July 26th... on the 27th we all went to ride that train pulled by the steamer... What a trip! Thing is, it made the "meeting" extra special, I never rode that train till that day nor got that close to the loco! So, it made that a day I'll remember for years to come! BUT the sound of the thing was amazing compared to what you hear in the movies of steam. The movies don't give the steamers the credit.... Where in person it sure does! Heres a picture of the gang of Trainboard last year....

What fun it was in that "Motley Crew"! :D

Living here in southeastern Pennsylvania I do not have to go far to see steam locomotives. About an 1 hour north of us we the New Hope & Ivyland , south of us in Delaware we have the Wilmington & Western . Further to the north about 3 hours we have Steamtown. And of course about an hour to the west are Strasburg and the Railroad Museum of PA. I have ridden on behind steam locomotives on all of these except the Wilmington & Western. We just have not had an opportunity to visit there yet. We have also ridden behind Thomas during Thomas Days at the Strasburg Railroad.

One line that no longer runs steam or regular excursion trains is the Reading & Northern. When it was the Blue Mountain & Reading it used to run an ex-Reading T1 #2102 and another steamer #425. Both of which I rode behind and their two E8A’s painted in PRR tuscan. Both of these locomotives also did some main line runs around the Philadelphia area which I chased.

As far as main line steam the best I every rode behind or saw were the N&W J 611 and the N&W 1218. I rode behind them during the 1987 NRHS Convention in Roanoke. I have also ridden behind the Nickel Plate #764(?).

When I get a chance I will post some of my photos of the various steam locomotives I mentioned above.

I have not gotten a chance to visit the Western Maryland Scenic RR. It is on our to do list for some day.

For me the rare locomotives are the covered wagons. I have only ridden behind the before mention E8A’s and Norfolk Southern’s FP7A’s that were painted for Southern. I did once see a Western Maryland F7A in the circus paint scheme on the point of a westbound freight on the Philly. Of course I did not have a camera.

    Tom,
Now I'm impatient to see the steamer pictures! I'm a steam fanatic to the very end, altho I like the first generation diesels, an one of the second generation diesels (the GP-30 I love that body style!)

But I have the Western Maryland Scenic just 25 to 30 miles south of me, then further south is the Potomac Eagle, an the Eat Broad Top,(which I think is the Potomac Eagle!) One day.. Tho, as you've said one day.....

I do however want to go to Cass WV! I have to ride behind, get pictures of one of the 3 (only one left in full steam) Western Maryland #6 Shay.... My top 3 favorite locomotives, Number ONE, The B&) EM-1 "7600". Number Two, is a tie between a B&O Big Six, S-1a
"6125", an the Western Maryland M-2 Challenger "1201" Challenger, and Number Three, is the Western Maryland #6 Shay..... The Shay is the only existing loco out of them all thats still around an under steam! :( What a shame a EM-1 wasn't preserved! Being they had plans to save one of them!

Just to let you know I posted some photos from the 1987 NRHS Convention. They are photos of the N&W A #1218, and the N&W J #611. They are in the Steam, Railfanning, & Railfan Events Forum.

Quite a lashup, Tom! Nothin' like the variety you'd find in the old days on CSX ;)
