This was reported to me by a fellow volunteer at the Danbury Railway Museum. This past weekend a soldier on leave from Iraq came into the DRM gift shop to by some books to take back with him. He left with $500.00 worth, saying they were for himself and his buddies.
It's good to know that some of our troops will soon have something from home to enjoy. I know it would make me very happy to immerse myself in a good book about a favorite RR! Boxcab E50
I understand that various train and model railroad magazines are being passed around among the GIs hungry for anything to read. It's a great escape from where they are, a reminder of a more inocent time of watching trains go by, real and models. Who knows, this may spawn a new wave of railfan/modelers when they come home. I wonder if there is a way to send some back issues over. It would be better than just filling milk crates with them.
That is a good idea, John. Can anyone help us with how to go about this? What agency could we work through, in order to keep the cost down?
