I post this here because it deals with two scales. My layout is an HO layout. The Mrs. and I have discussed for years... years... the possiblity of getting a nice large scale train to go under the Christmas tree. At first I thought G scale... then I am thinking O scale. We have for whatever reason just never done it. The subject came up tonight and the Mrs. pretty much directed me to buy a train set for the tree and is leaving the details to me. G scale? O Scale? I am leaning towards O scale for ... shall we say... "selfish" reasons. I just think that it would be easier someday..... to set up a second, smaller layout. I will always model in HO. I just love it and am to accustomed to it. Plus, I have too much energy , $$$$, and time put into HO scale. I just think a nice O scale C&O engine would be cool rambling around the living room, under the tree @ Christmas time. G? O? Opinions?
Kitbash: I had very large HO and O scale layouts for many years when I was alot younger. Then I came to my senses and decided "less is more". Now I have a moderate sized N scale layout in a third garage as we have no basements in Florida. I'm expanding the JJJ&E for the third and last time. Have fun.... Stay cool and run steam....
Nothing can beat the timeless classic of a Lionel set under the tree. That was how many of use got started in the hobby. I have a decent collection of Lionel stuff that I accumulated over the last 4 or 5 years.
Although I have been N scaling, for now well over 30 years, I still love the Lionel, and American Flyer of my youth. Were I presented the chance, nothing against G scale, but I would most likely go with Lionel. Boxcab E50
And the winner is... O Scale. Today I got my first O scale "set". A Nickel Plate Road SuperSet w/ the digital sound, decoder/analog.. etc. Plus I got some extra track and a C&O coil car. (HAD to have come C&O thrown in there somewhere) I am down in my basement now, running my HO's. Nothing can take the place of the HO scale IMHO. HOWEVER... I must say.. Lionel is built like a brick... well .. it is just built well. American car companies could take some lessons from Lionel trains. MAN these things are "stout". Still the best toy in the world. PERIOD. Our Christmas tree never looked (or sounded) better.
