For simple image editing you should download Irfan View. I have been using this program for several years. It's simple and free! It is usually the top download on Tucows. You can resize, optimize, crop, rotate your photos - etc. It's a small program to download and I suggest downloading it today. Charlie [ 21. October 2002, 11:44: Message edited by: E-8 ]
Dick, No offense my friend but might you consider a PC rather than a Mac for your next purchase? Charlie
I own both platforms, a screemin Powerbook and a Pentium Pro. I use the PC for programs that aren't available for Mac. I like the Mac much better but refuse to be held captive by lack of software. The cool thing is that a Pentium Pro or II or even III is cheap($$$) and will run everything I need.
Once you go Mac, you never go back. Seriously tho, on compatability? Almost a non issue. There are only two things I can't do on my Mac: Run MSTS, or 3rd PlanIt. Everything else I can do, and faster. BTW I'd recommend PS LE 5.0 or Adobe PS Elements for Mac. The first usually is given away free with digital cameras & junk on a CD, which will have both PC and Mac version on it. Elements has to be purchased at About $80. There is also a program called Photo Converter which is hareware and runs at about $40. It's ok, but PS , even LE, is lightyears better.
Charlie. I have considerd it but the wife has thousands of patterns stored on disc's that she has collected of the years. Quite often she goes to the patterns and pulls up one to make for a birthday or Christmas or something. I don't know of any program that will convert mack format to IBM. I have asked at Mac Warehouse and they look at me like I was stupid. Also, right now I am unable to work at the present time and we only have our Social Security to live on. That is why my layout is progressing so slow now.
Free sounds cheap enough at $10.00, but it does not say it will support (or work on windows 95). With things the way they are in Bosnia, I am reluctant to send a ten dollar bill through the mail to him. Do I read his message correctly?
I usually use Paint Shop Pro 7, but I downloaded this program to have a look. It took just 12 seconds to download! Plus about the same to install. For a free program it is pretty good.
Charlie, dumb question--I downloaded it, and it wants me to associate all the different types of image files with it. I have a LOT of images filed. If I associate them with the new program, will I lose the association of those types of files with my old scanner software? Or will they be associated with both?
Jim, You don't have to associate it with any extensions to be able to use it. I suggest this program for those that do not have a more advanced graphics program available or do not undeerstand how to use a more advanced program. Charlie
When I installed it, a message said "do you want to associate file extensions with Irfan View" or something like that. I clicked no, and it did not install. So I clicked yes, it installed, and changed all the file extension associations to default to Irfan. So I went to Paint Shop Pro preferences and changed all default file extensions back to PSP. You can still use any program to open any file, but I like mine to default to my usually used program. It is not a bad little program and very easy to use, but I don't think you can reduce file size with it, unless I have missed something.
Alan, that's exactly what happened when I tried to install it. Not wanting to shift associations, I have let it sit there and not installed it. I think the programs we are using are more versatile. I know mine will allow me to shrink file sizes, as it asks how much % compression I want to use to save the file as a jpeg.
Yeah, same here Fitz. I only downloaded it out of curiosity On Paint Shop Pro I can set the percentage of file size reduction, which soon becomes second nature and I guess the reduction about right, usually.
Alan, I didn't think I installed it, but today when the machine booted up, I have a new shortcut icon on my menu page, for the new program. Just for the heck of it I opened a jpg file and it came up. I guess I must play with the program now to see what it is capable of.
Guys, it's just a simple program for folks who don't have or know how to use a more advanced program. I didn't associate any file extensions with it when I installed it and it isn't associated presently with any on my machines. Charlie
Charlie, I guess we were looking for complications in a simple program For a free prog it is very good
I'm just trying to suggest something simple and free for people that may utilize the railimages.com site and not have a lot of experience using more complicated or expensive software. Certainly this program can not compare with the more popular and sophisticated programs. Charlie
Sorry, Charlie (wasn't that the start of a commercial long ago?). I guess we have tried to complicate something that you meant to be simple. Human nature.
I have used this program, Irfranview, for several years. It is really easy to learn and use. I really like the capture feature which is much easier to use than most photo proggies' resizers. And, although the learning curve is long, you can get plug-ins to use with it that function just like the bigger, higher dollar retail proggies. See at:http://thepluginsite.com/ You may need to use their software to convert the files (hence my quote "learning curve") Just check his FAQ, the program's help file, or email him for any assistance you might need. You will never find another photo program which is supported by the author so willingly and helpfully. All you have to do is email him with a question, and he will get right back to you.
LOL!!! I got a good laugh from that statement. Thanks Charlie! </font> Seriously though, we don't want to turn this into a Mac vs. PC flame war. I'll look around and post some links to free and easy Mac programs to edit your pictures with.</font>
