hey guys, i was weathering my accurail boxcar and the little plug holding the trucks kept falling off and the trucks fell offand didn't stop rolling far away(thanks to my metal wheels :D ) and the coupler box kept falling out too . so anyone have any tricks to prevent this, i would still like to be able to change my couplers (soon changing everything to kadee) right know i have mchenry. and for the trucks the only thing i thought of is to put a screw instead of the plug. anyone has any modifications they did and that want to share.

I had that problem when i put the Confederation Flyer in operating condition. I took a small brass screw, cut to length and used that on three of the trucks and works very well. The hobby shop had no replacement part. I also tried a small dowel and sanded it to a taper, it was ok but the screw worked better. P.S. the car looks great!

What I have done is take a 1/8 inch tube and place it in the hole. Cut it close to the bottom of the car. Glue it in place. Once the glue is dried I fill in the gaps with white putty. I then file the tube down flush to the hole. I then use a self-tapping 2-56 screw to hold the truck in place.

Sorry about the blurry photo. That is what I get for rushing it. Will try to get a better one later.

    Tap,
The newer Accurail kits are coming out with screws for the trucks and coupler pockets. O nthe old ones I do what Tom has said. It works with the coupler pockets to but you have to cut the molded pin off and drill a hole in for the screw!! It works great and you can change it whenever you want. It took me a while to do seeing I have well over a hundred Accurail cars.

I also run screws through the coupler box, as some of my accurail cars had their coupler heights dropping after some mileage.

I like those Accurail cars too. I recently got a kit without one of the sprues in it. A quick email to their customer service brought not one, not two, but three replacement parts in the mail.

Excellent service. Very professional and fast. Contact Eric at accurail (at) accurail.com to see what he can do for you. (Of course you'll need to replace "(at)" with @... darn spammers.)
