Wow, you're all talking about basements, not addiction. To me, this indicates a really SERIOUS addiction.

I've been thinking about addiction, but I don't know how common my situation is. When I was a little kid growing up in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, I was more or less raised by my grandmother, who -- I now realize --- was a pioneering female railfan. Every weekend, we rode trains, and we took trips together -- I remember the SP's San Joaquin Daylight with a GS-4 on the head end, and also watching a set of F units replacing the steam engine at Bakersfield for the run south to Tehachapi.

For years, I wanted to express my love of railroading in model form, but I just couldn't find the time. I sketched layouts and, occasionally, picked up a magazine and dreamed. Finally, I gave myself permission to do this, and I'm having so much fun it hurts. And, yes, I run up the stairs to run trains every chance I can get.

So what if I'm addicted? There are much worse things to get hooked on, obviously. The bottom line is that model railroading is defensible at the minimal level of saying that, while we're doing it, we can't get into very much trouble.

    ^_^
