I am just about ready to start scenery on my 12'x14' layout of The Indiana Railroad (INRD) in eastern Illinois. I am using 2" foam and have the cork caulked to the foam and the track caulked to the cork. I am ready to start the scenery process as soon as I finish building my Static Grass Applicator from the MRH plans a couple of months ago. I know that paint will stick easily to the foam as I painted the cork a dark gray and a 1/2" or so out from the cord painted the foam. I am going to use ground goop or light weight joint compound and wonder if I will have problems with either one sticking to the foam. Has anyone had problems with joint compound or ground goop types of coverings sticking to the foam?
I just put together a Christmas layout a few weeks back and used pink foam with joint compound on top to give a little bit of elevation. Joint compound is adhering fine, as is latex paint and some sculptimold. I could probably physically scrape it off, but I don't see it flaking off unless there is harsh treatment. Hope that helps. Have a great day! Gregory
I to use 2" foam to build my layout. I have found that it makes for a quieter opperation. Any way, I have never used joint compound but I have used plaster of paris on top of foam. I have never had a problem with it. I have even painted "Dirt" pain onto the foam and then add scenery on that. For glue I make my own mixture, 1Part whit glue to 4Parts water with a drop of dish soap added. I add scenery in 6"x6" sections. After I lay ballest, grass ect, I pre wet it with an eye droper & isopropal alchohol, I then use a seperate eye droper for the glue mix. I know you didnt ask for all of this info, but yes Plaster products will do well on foam. I also use the spray foam in a can to make mountains. I go back after 24hrs and then carve it to my needs. I used all of these methods on my D&SL Moffat Road. I posted pics in my Albums if you want to check it out. Bruce:thumbs_up:
