Grade, curvature, altitude, etc are taken into account when determining how much tonnage to rate a unit at.

Not so much the tonnage ratings, but that single digit number (adjustment factor) in the far RH column. What is that?

Would it have to do with the number of cars in the train? I have read of adjustment factors dealing with tonnage and car count. An adjustment factor of 3 called for adding three tons to the total train weight for each car in the train.
