I have an athearn gp-35 and gp-40. I have a VERY limited space for a layout (approx 3 1/2 by 6). My question is: What is the absolute minimum radius / diameter that these engines will negotiate?

Thanks in advance for any input / advice.

Is that feet or inches? Every radii I've come across in HO is measured in inches. I think 18" is the minimum for most Athearn 4 axel engines, but it could be less. I'd check the minimum radius for your largest car before you start however as some cars won't navigate a radius that tight. If you have the room however, I'd go up to 22" for some of the larger 6 axel engines and cars in case you want them in the future.

I wouldn't go any tighter than 18 inches for a minimum radius. If you could use a larger radius (say, 22"), you could run cars up to 50 feet, and also modern covered hoppers.

The info for this little NW2 I'm buying states minimum radius 18" and that's a switcher! I saw some 15" radius sectional track at the hobby store though. I've always tried to plan for larger radius, even if it means adding on to the table/layout.

Both will go easily on 18" radius. I have an Athearn GP35 and it cruises along just fine. Even my SD40-2 handles that readily.

For the latest GP35, 18" is the minimum radius. The older GP 35 with the wide body will go a bit less. The GP40 is 18".
