Effective at 12:01 am on June 29th, the following lines will be transferred through sale to the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG), a carrier under the control of the RailAmerica organization: 1. The Alamosa Subdivision from milepost 180.0 near Walsenburg, CO to milepost 299.30, the end of current UP ownership at Derrick, CO. 2. The Antonito Subdivision in its entirety from milepost 251.7 at Alamosa to milepost 281.78 at Antonito, This is a total of approximately 149.38 miles. SLRG will also hold trackage rights over the five miles of line between milepost 180 and Walsenburg for the sole purpose of interchanging traffic with UP at that station. At start up, UP will operate a five day per week turnaround service from Pueblo to accommodate the interchange at Walsenburg. SLRG will maintain a handling carrier relationship with UP, meaning that UP will control pricing and contracts on interline movements and SLRG will not appear in waybill routes. A single handling carrier charge of $450 per car will be in effect on day one of operations. SLRG will be responsible for paying car hire in the first instance and will not be granted car hire relief refunds, with one major exception - cars loaded at Antonito with perlite that are subject to demurrage relief agreements with Harborlite and Dicaperl. The office of SLRG will be at 601 State Street, Alamosa, 81101. The general manager will be Bill Hudran. The marketing manager will be Jerry Brown. The office number will be 719-857-0552. I found a site for the folks with that ex-Wagon Wheel Gap line. It sure looks promising. I hope their goals can be reached. Have you ever been down to see what they are doing? Wish I could get there.... Boxcab E50
First off, I have never been in that part of the state. Second, the roster. There may be more to come. They are all of the GP40 flavor. HATX 801 HATX 803 HLCX 4300, ex GP40X (SP)(now a GP40-3) HLCX 4301, ex DRGW 3065 HLCX 4302
Thanks Jim. I'm not surprised at the GP40 flavor, and the 4300 is one that I'm interested in. I had hoped that some GP9's would be in the mix, but I understand that they are on their way out. Depending on traffic levels, they could get away with those units. I need to get my maps out to see exactly where this operation is taking over. Cheers, Greg Elems
That whole line has been four axel power for a long time. It is a combo of light rail and tight curves.
I am an engineer working for Rail America, I ran on this road (SJRG) for the month of April 2004. Read about and view photos of my run over at "railroadforums.com", "shortlines". James T. Bradley, DGNO RR
txrocket, welcome to Trainboard! If I may be allowed to brag on you a little bit: This fellow also has a great website devoted to the Dallas, Garland & Northeastern/Texas Northeastern Railroad, which runs on former T&P, MKT, and SSW track around Garland, Greenville, Sherman & Denison, TX. Once part of Railtex, both lines are now RA properties. His photo rosters are worth checking out!
