Hey everyone. I've been wanting to start a project RSD-5 since the ones from atlas are extremely hard to find. I know both the RSD-5 and RS-3 where the exact same length, same hood, the only big difference was the 6 axle trucks. I've found a cheap athearn RTR RS-3, However, is there a supplier of 6 axle Alco style trucks that will work with the athearn without having to do extreme modifications to either the truck or the athearn? I have found everything I need except the trucks. thanks in advance geep_fan
ok, I had someone refer me towards bowser at the club. However I don't see any 6 axle offset Alco trucks over at bowser. Anyone know the part number for these, and how compatible are they with athearn?
Why not just track down a Kato RSD4/5 in HO scale. Much easier, and everything on the running gear is done. You can find the Kato HO RSD4 / 5 on those famous online auction sites. I just did a search on that famous auction site, and I see at least three available. Or post a "WTB" on one of those yahoo groups for buying/selling HO equipment.
Good idea. Also, you might buy the parts or the whole truck direct from Atlas if still in stock. tracktime: Welcome to TrainBoard.
yeah, I've been on the lookout for the RSD4/5's from Kato/Atlas. If I could find one within a reasonable price (most people seem to think that because the units are kato and atlas, they can ask triple digits for the engines) I would snap one up. I already got beat to both that were in the hobby shops in town.
Bowser may not catalog these trucks yet but they've promised the C-628/630 fairly soon (at least one of them). I'd send them an e-mail and ask if these trucks will be stocked. And as a far reach (and probably an unpowered RSD-4/5), you might see if you can find one of the old AHM C-628's from the 1970's. The trck side frames were nicely done castings but you'd want to replace the wheels.
