Yes it's me ! How can I tell if a ALCO locomotive is an RS-2 or an RS-3 ? They look alike to me
The basic way is that the Rs-3 has battery boxes (cabinets with louvers) next to the cab at the sill while the Rs-2 doesn't. Jason
Essentially the car bodies were identical. The major spotting difference is the RS3 has it's battery box on the running board, on the short hood end. (Operating long hood forward, this is behind the fireman's side.) The RS2 battery box was under frame, engineer's side. Less obvious, except after spills and dirt accumulated, were the RS2 units had their fuel fill and gauge on the engineer's cab side.
Here's a comparison photo - RS-2 is on top, RS-3 on the bottom: You can see the fuel fill on the cab side on the RS-2, and the battery box on the RS-3 easily visible by the "step" down in the handrail by the short hood.
Did the RS2 have battery boxes on both sides? All I could recall was the fireman's side. It's been a million years....
I don't know diddly-squat about diesels. But wanted to say, welcome "home" Candy. We have missed you! Do you have any new photos of recent work for us to enjoy?
Did someone mention fuel spills on RS-2s? http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=507282&nseq=2 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=461420&nseq=14 RS-3, no fuel fillers: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=516258&nseq=19 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=504681&nseq=33
THANKS !!! I have an RS-2 A New Haven RS-2 I got very cheaply. Looks great and runs great. I will post pictures if I can remember how to do it .
Hello Candy. Nice to see you are still with us. That last posting I remember you were building a crane for your salvage yard. How's that coming along?
Actually I was going to order a crane but I got sick and never got around to it But I will get back to my junk yard very soon.
