Was the IC an all EMD railroad before the CN takeover?

Seems like they are most recognized for their EMD's...

Not entirely. There were 12 ex-LMSX GE C40-8CW's (ex-Conrail units) on roster in '94 which appear to be still there when CN tookover the post-1990 IC in 1999.

The earlier pre-'72 IC (before it merged with GM&O to become the 1972-1990 ICG) had ALCo's and GE's.

It's easy to assume the later IC (and even ICG) was an all-EMD (I did! ) road due to the success of the Paducah rebuild programme and the number of examples still plying the rails. [IMG]

Depends on what era we're talking about? I'm guessing you mean IC Corp? The post- ICG incarnation of the RR. The answer is almost, but not quite. But I seem to recall seeing almost all photos have been of EMD units.

I took the question as referring to the period prior to CN, which would be the IC Corp. Just those 12 GE's, otherwise all EMD.

There's not too many images of non-EMD units anywhere for any era. Quite a few of the SD70I/40/40-2's and Paducah-builts, though. [IMG]

IC had 6 U30Bs and 10 U33Cs. The 30s were sold to the iowa RR in 1982 and only ran for a few years. The U33Cs were scrapped on 5/18/84

Gary, I have it in my mind that the LMSX units only arrived for good and were relettered after the Conrail breakup - but I could be wrong on that? - I think LMSX was set up as a way to pay back HP-Hours owed by Conrail to IC and NS I think? So when Conrail was split up the LMSX fleet was split with them.

Oddly enough on this topic - CN has bought brand new C44-9W's and given them IC reporting marks, so the post-CN IC definately is not an EMD only railroad!

So far as I can tell, the pre-ICG IC was pretty much EMD only until a change in traction policy saw them get the small batches of U-Boats and a small batch of C636's  in the late 60's - they then inherited some RS1's from the GM&O as well with that merger. (There might have been some Alco switchers from GM&O as well - seems likely as they liked their Alco's?)

All of these were very much 'minority power' in a big sea of EMD's tho! There were some decent lengths of time when IC was all EMD - such as mid-80's to mid 90's for example - and as far as I can tell before the late 60's it was all EMD too...

The U30Bs were the first non-EMD power on the roster in 20 years when IC bought them in the mid to late 1960s. (don't know the year off the top of my head)
