Southern GP30's did NOT have all weather windows, from what I remember. The N&W units did, but I'll have to check pics to see if they were on both sides (I think they were). If you are going to model specific Southern units, let me know: I have pics of virtually all of the Southern GP30's.

I checked in my best N&W book: N&W Second Generation Diesels by Withers/Bowers; It states N&W had 2 basic orders for GP30's: # 5637 and 5647. The first order was built 6/62-8/62 (N&W #522-565) and all were equipped witht "bay windows". The second order was built in 11/62 for NKP #900-908, which became N&W 2900-2908. These too were eqipped with "bay windows". The NKP units were unique, in that they were low nosed, had no dynamic brakes, had a horizontal nose headlight, and had the bell "cut in" under the nose headlight! The pictures from the book show most of the N&W units (high nose) with the all weather cabs on both sides. This would make sense due to the fact they were equipped with dual control stands and could easily be operated with either end as "front".

The all weather cab windows were used on the engineer's side on N&W units. All of the high hood N&W locomotives were equipped with dual control stands, so these units had all weather cab windows on both sides. The low hood N&W locomotives were equipped with one control stand, thus a single all weather cab window was used on the engineer's side.

Southern Railway units did not use the all weather cab windows. However, some Southern units were retrofitted with them by NS, so if you are modeling an NS unit its good to check photos.
