Amtrak detours Coast Starlight over the Tehachapi Loop Sunday Print | Email | Contact Us June 23, 2008 Tehachapi Amtrak train No. 14 passes the north end of the Bealville, Calif., siding Sunday. The train made a rare detour through the San Joaquin Valley and over the Tehachapi Mountains due to a bridge replacement near Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dave Styffe) TEHACHAPI, Calif. - Amtrak's Coast Starlight traversed California's Tehachapi Loop on Sunday for only the third time since its 1971 inception. The detour stems from work on its normal route between Los Angeles and Seattle due to a bridge replacement project just north of the Santa Barbara station. It was a one-day, one-time detour. The southbound train, Amtrak No. 11, detoured at Sacramento for a run down the San Joaquin Valley to Bakersfield, then over the Tehachapi Mountains to Mojave, Palmdale, and on to its Los Angeles destination. The northbound train, No. 14, did the reverse. Today's Starlight is expected to resume its normal route. The San Joaquin Valley is regularly served by a fleet of Amtrak's San Joaquin trains operating between Bakersfield and Sacramento or Bakersfield and the San Francisco Bay area. Amtrak bus service connects Bakersfield with Los Angeles and its surrounding communities.
